Erskine, Ebenezer

Erskine, Ebenezer
(1680–1754)
   Denomination Founder.
Erskine was born into a Scottish non-conforming family and he was educated at the University of Edinburgh. After ordination into the Presbyterian ministry, he served a congregation in Portmoak until 1731. After moving to Stirling, he preached against the system of clerical patronage and, together with three supporters, was suspended by the General Assembly. They left the Church and founded the Secession Church of the Church of Scotland.
This grew rapidly, but it later split over the issue of the burghers’ oath (whether it was lawful for newly elected burghers to take an oath). Erskine sided with the burgher majority, but both groups split several times more after Erskine’s death. The Secession Church rejoined the Church of Scotland in 1956.
